Periodontal Implant Examination

Periodontal Implant Examination

A comprehensive Periodontal Implant Examinations  will be performed by Drs. Dennis Nishimine, Dee Nishimine, & Sophia Tseng at your initial dental visit.  At regular check-up exams, our doctors and hygienists will include the following:

  • Update of Medical and Dental Hx: Check vital signs of blood pressure, pulse rate and Bacterial Plaque scores.
  • Head and Neck Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, lymph nodes, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Periodontal Probing and evaluation: Check the pocket depths, bleeding upon probing(BOP), mobility of teeth, amount of gum recession or lack of attached keratinized tissue, and loss of bone between molar roots.
  • Occlusal Evaluation: Check the way the teeth come together and make sure they are being as effective as possible.  Occlusal problems may accelerate periodontal breakdown. We may recommend orthodontic therapy for you. Check and evaluate the TMJ for popping and clicking to determine if this may contribute to headaches.
  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss.  X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Examination of tooth decay and Examination of existing restorations: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.  We will refer you back to your general dentist for this and this will be their responsibility.

This appointment will take apprximately1 and 1/2 hours and we would recommend that your spouse or significant other be present.  Listening to you and communications are the key to successful therapy and a BEAUTIFUL SMILE!

Treatment Plan Consultation: will then be provided and we will discuss diagnosis, prognosis, and various treatment options that would most benefit you. Your understanding and input are critical to the success of your therapy.

Financial Arrangements: will be made prior to begining any therapy so that you have a full understanding of what we will be providing for you and what your financial obligation will be.  We can proceed as you feel deemed necessary for your benefit.

Supportive Periodontal Therapy(SPT's)

Supportive Periodontal Therapy(SPT's),  dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists.  Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened bacterial plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of bacterial plaque: Bacterial plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria plaque produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stain and bacterial plaque that is not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.
